Estimation of Uranium in Some Edible and Commercial Plants

Abstract

The trace contents of uranium have been estimated in some edible and commercial plants by PTA method. The groups of food plants studied are cereals, pulses, underground vegetables, leafy vegetables, and fruit vegetables. The commercial plants and ingredients taken are betel leaves, tobacco leaves, areca nuts, and lime. Among the different samples studied, the average uranium content, in general, is found to vary from 0.25 to 2.67 ppm

Dr S Choudhury, a lecturer in Botany, Pandu College, Guwahati, has been investigating the trace element uranium in the different plants of specific interest by using SSNTD technique .Recently he has been awarded the PhD degree from Gauhati University for his thesis on 'Estimation of Uranium Traces in some Edible and Commercial Plants of Assam'. He has a few papers published to his credit.
M. Boruah, Government Ayurvedic College, Guwahati
Dr (Ms)M Boruah, a Lecturer in Physics, Govt Ayurvedic College , Guwahati, has been engaged in trace element studies using SSNTDs since a decade . In her works on uranium estimation of medicinal plants, she has obse rved a possible co rre lat ion between uranium content and medicinal properties of plants . She has published five research papers on trace element studies and medicinal plants.
T. D. Goswami, Gauhati University, Guwahati
Dr TD Goswami is a Professor in Physics at Gauhati University, specialised in the studies of high energy nuclear disintegrations using photo-nuclear emulsion technique . He is currently engaged in the studies and applications o f particle tracks in solids . Dr Goswami has published about 40 research papers and has authored 5 books (in Assamese) for the undergraduate level.
