Abstract

The paper examines the importance of public libraries in educating the masses and increasing theliteracy rate and disseminating knowledge. It also describes the historical origin of ancient universitiesand centres of learning, including public libraries in India and their contribution to the society. Thepaper discusses the problems faced by the public libraries today and various options available for theirimprovement. The author proposes a new model of public-private partnership with non-governmentalorganisations (NGOs) and public-sector undertakings (PSUs) for the growth and development of publiclibraries to enable them to serve the user community.
