Abstract

The world wide web infrastructure has brought a revolutionary change in the organisation and presentation of information. Such a change resulted in the concept of virtual libraries. Of the numerous virtual library applications, we envision a virtual walkthrough application. Here, a user, with access to the internet or intranet, can explore a specific place of interest without having to travel physically. The place of interest is modelled as a virtual world, containing a vast number of virtual objects. This paper describes the two modules of our project 'virtual walkthrough for Defence Science Library': (a) Module 1—General Browsing, provides the user with the interface to view the virtual tour of the DSL that allows users to visit the library and its services virtually through the web and (b) Module 2—Guided Tour, complements the text-based search of the user for the books with an extended multimedia interface for retrieval of books in the library.
