Multimedia is a combination of text, graphics, animation, audio and video, converted from different formats into a uniformat digital media and hypertext is non-sequential writing or reading. Multimedia prepared in hypertext environment is called Hypermedia. This paper describes multimedia, its applications and limitations in general. The need for multimedia in libraries and its use for various applications in US and Europe such as multimedia library information kiosks, walk-through programmes, training, digital libraries, multimedia databases, multimedia catalogues, multimedia library collections, geographical information systems, electronic publishing, etc are also discussed.
