Infometrics Growth Analysis of Medical Science Researchers in Nigeria during 2007 to 2016

Abstract

This article accounts for the trend and pattern of medical research in Nigerian Universities within the span of ten years. The study aims to evaluate the research productivity of Nigerian Medical Science Researchers, appraise the preferred research communication outlets, analysing the growth rate of Nigerian medical science research publications, productivity, and visibility of both author and institution. Also, the trends of collaboration with colleagues within the continent and intercontinental were reviewed. The documents included in this research were retrieved from Scopus database; the results revealed incremental research output in medical science between 2007 and 2016 with 2016 having the highest number. It also showed that the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice is the most widely patronised by Nigeria Medical researchers and that the growth rate of research productivity is 9.5 per cent as indicated by the T value of 0.094768. Moreover, the researcher with the highest output was credited with 103 publication, while the trend of inter-continental research collaboration of Nigerian medical sciences researchers with scholars from another part of the world was more with the United States researchers.

Oluwole O. Durodolu, University of South Africa, Pretoria

Dr Oluwole O. Durodolu, is a Post-Doctoral fellow of the Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa. He holds a PhD in library and information science from the University of Zululand, South Africa in 2016. A Certified Librarian of Nigeria and a member of the Association for Southern African Indexers and bibliographers. He has published articles on information literacy, ICT4D, informetrics, information communication technology.

Akinniyi A. Adeleke, Tekena Tamuno Library, Redeemer’s University, Ede, Nigeria

Dr Akinniyi Ayobami Adeleke is a Principal Librarian and the Coordinator, Tekena Tamuno Library, Redeemer’s University, Nigeria. He also holds a Master of Library Studies and Ph.D. in Library, Archival and Information Studies from the University of Ibadan. He coordinates the digitisation projects of Redeemer’s University since 2010 and also coordinates the Information Literacy programmes of Tekena Tamuno Library since inception. He has published articles on topics like information literacy, digitisation, bibliometrics, cataloguing and classification, information communication technology.

Joshua Onnade Ojo, University of Lagos Library, Akoka, Lagos Nigeria

Dr Joshua Onaade Ojo, Ph.D, CLN is a librarian working in University of Lagos, Unilag Main Library, Akoka, yaba. His area of interest includes information resources management, information literacy skills, information brokerage, information for development, social work and human rights for development. He is a member of Nigeria Library Association, currently the chairman of the Lagos-State Chapter of the Association.
