Call for papers for Special issue on Artificial Intelligence and Libraries
This special issue aims to provide an authoritative platform for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals, academics, and researchers to disseminate pioneering studies and practical experiences concerning Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in libraries. Recognizing that AI fundamentally alters information access, management, and service delivery modes, this issue seeks contributions that critically explore the evolving interplay between AI technologies and library practice.
The issue will convene leading experts, practitioners, and technologists to foster the exchange of advanced knowledge, innovative approaches, and visionary perspectives on transforming library operations and services in the age of AI.
Scope and Topics
Authors are invited to submit original research articles, case studies, critical reviews, or technical notes addressing, but not restricted to, the following areas:
-
AI-driven practices in libraries and documentation centres, such as predictive collection development, automated curation, reference enhancement, inventory management, and patron engagement
-
Task automation using AI, including subject indexing, metadata creation, and cataloguing workflows
-
AI-facilitated user analytics, behaviour tracking, and personalization of library services
-
Creation of novel information services and improvement of user experience through AI tools
-
Deployment of AI-based chatbots, voice agents, and virtual assistants in libraries
-
Advanced AI techniques in libraries: natural language processing, machine/deep learning, text mining, recognition systems (speech, facial), content recognition across multiple formats, virtual agents, decision management platforms
-
Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, Perplexity: their use, implications, and impact on library and research environments
-
Enhancements in knowledge management, organization, and retrieval: AI-based knowledge graphs, semantic information access, and advanced search algorithms
-
Intersections of AI with research literacy, scholarly communication, and systematic review methodologies
-
Ethical concerns in library AI applications: bias mitigation, transparency, responsible use of AI-generated data, and promotion of data/algorithmic literacy
-
Capacity building for AI adoption, skills development, training, and professional education for LIS personnel
-
