Abstract : A rough but simple method of assessment of reflectance value of fabrics of different colour for total solar radiation including long-infrared component, has been described, which makes use of black-globe thermometer and can be conveniently used in the field. Observations taken on some fabrics of importance to the Defence Services have been reported. |

Abstract : The practical difficulties in computing the solar heat load from basic data using Blum's equations, have been discussed. Limitations of several instruments designed from time to time for measuring the separate components of solar heat load or for integrating them into a composite index have also been pointed out. An attempt has been made in this paper to show on theoretical grounds, that for practical purposes, most of the difficulties can be avoided by retaining the use of the popular black globe thermometer, and providing a correction to its reading for the particular colour of clothing or complexion of skin, for clothed or nude subject in the erect posture. The validity of the conclusion has been judged again available data. |
