Protection against Radiation Induced Performance Decrement in Mice Author : Jain, Vinay ;Goel, H.C.;Pant, Kanchan;Mukherjee, S.K. Source : Defence Science Journal ; Vol:47(2) ; 1997 ; pp 167-171 Subject : 61 Medical Sciences Keywords : Behavioural abnormalities ;Diltiazem;Gamma radiation;Radiation exposure;Radioprotectors;Low level ionizing radiations Abstract : Recognising that there is lack of information on the effects of low-level ionizing radiations and the modifying role of radioprotectors, an attempt has been made in this study to explore the relationship between impairment of spatial learning and low level of radiation exposure. A radial arm maze was utilised to evaluate radiation-induced behavioural alterations and performance decrement in mice. Immediately after whole body exposure to gamma radiation (absorbed dose, I Gy) significant perturbations in the learned behaviour of the animals were observed. The regular control movement became irregular and the food consumption time was reduced appreciably (40 %). Recovery took place in four days. If diltiazem (7 mg/kg b.w.), a Ca/sup 2+/ channel blocker and a radioprotector, was administered i.p. 20-30 min prior to irradiation, radiation-induced behavioural abnormalities were reduced. Mechanisms underlying protection by diltiazem against radiation-induced performance decrement observed in the present study need to be investigated.
Effect of Common Vegetables on Thyroid Function in Rats A Preliminary Study Author : Nagpal, K.K. ;Mukherjee, S.K.;Uniyal, B.P.;Singh, L.R.;Sarkar, S.R. Source : Defence Science Journal ; Vol:33(4) ; 1983 ; pp 317-321 Subject : 61 Medical Sciences Keywords : Goitrogenic nature ;Thiocyanate contents;Goitrogenic potency Abstract : Goitrogenic potency of some vegetables of Delhi were studied in rats. Adult male rats were fed separately on thiouracil, thiocyanate and extracts of carrot, cabbage and turnip procured from Delhi market for 26 days. Cabbage and turnip showed high thiocyanate contents while carrot did not show any measurable amount. Appreciable increase in thyroid weight to body weight ratio, plasma thiocyanate, plasma/sup 131/1 contents and protein bound/sup 131/ 1 or plasma were observed in all groups of experimental, rats, except carrot. Results indicated goitrogenic nature of cabbage and turnip in rats.
Performance Decrement by Exposure to Sub Lethal Doses of Ionising Radiations Author : Mukherjee, S.K. Source : Defence Science Journal ; Vol:50(1) ; 2000 ; pp 63-74 Subject : 57.089 Biomedical Sciences ;61 Medical Sciences Keywords : Ionising radiations;Radioprotectors Abstract : "Under many circumstances, exposure to ionising radiation can impede performance significantly. After large doses, lethal or supra-lethal, behavioural effects are rapid (within minutes), but up to 10Gy, performance deficits develop rather slowly and are long-lasting. All tasks are not equally radiosensitive; tasks with complex and demanding requirements may be disrupted even at low radiation doses (<1 Gy). Combined injuries can act synergistically with radiation exposure to greatly increase behavioural deficits. Most of the protectors developed todate are themselves behaviourally toxic at radioprotective as well as non-protective doses and the adverse effects are further aggravated in the presence of radiation. A very limited number of radioprotectors have been found to give behavioural protection at very low, almost non-toxic doses. "
