Abstract : A technique for automatic logon to Dialog host computer at Palo Alto, California, USA, is described. The software, written in Procomm Script language, helps in connecting to the Gateway Packet Switching Service PAD at New Delhi provided by the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. After connecting to the PAD, the software sends NUI, User No., Password and loads up the search strategy. The software with automatic option selection capability, can be learnt by librarians with minimum effort.

Abstract : Online database searches have become common and a number of American and European databases, notably those related to science and engineering have become very popular due to their specialisation in specific fields. Although telecommunication charges are relatively low, specific database charges are substantiHI, depending upon the area of specialisation. This paper discusses the access and search of global databases, value addition through organisation of the received data and sharing of the organised data in the local area network. The original organised database when accessed and downloaded becomes an ASCll file. If the selected database is to be reconstructed at the receiving end, it i s a laborious task of manual data entry which could be very slow and error-prone. A program developed for automated conversion of the ASCll file into a standard database format is described.

Abstract : Technical services are as a mix of skilled and professional jobs (done mostly behind the screen) to provide user services in libraries. Technical services have been with the libraries throughout their evolution from the days of clay tablets, papyrus to paper and virtual libraries. Technical services have evolved making use of available technology of the day. In the days of all powerful and era-defining information technology, the technical services are still necessary to help libraries to accomplish their mission of connecting users with the needed information. New technology affords splendid opportunity to extend and augment intensively and improve qualitatively the library services to the users. OPACs not only haw tremendous capacity but equally versatile powerful searching capabilities and mechanism. Classification has many new roles to play in designing, searching and managing electronic databases. This paper cites Electronic Dewey as an example to illustrate the role of IT in editing and publishing classification schedules. At the end some unsolved issues have been identified and emerging trends in technical services are enumerated.

Abstract : The study endeavours to find out the level of awareness and use of online databases as well as to ascertain research scholar’s satisfaction with the infrastructure to support accessing online databases in the AMU campus. A well structured questionnaire was administered to the research scholars of the AMU to collect data regarding the awareness and use of online databases. The survey reveals that most of the research scholars are aware of the online databases availability and largely use them for their research work and to update subject knowledge. They fully agree that with the usage of online databases, the quality of research work improves with enrichment of appurtenant contents and materials, leading to high quality manuscript. It is however found that the main problems faced by research scholars in using online databases are lack of information on online databases subscribed by university on their subjects/researches. It is also noticed that nearly 50 per cent research scholars are satisfied with the infrastructure to support accessing online databases in the AMU campus.
