Abstract : Electronic bulletin board systems are vital tools for computer-mediated communication among computer users. These are similar to the bulletin boards that are displayed in a library. However, these are operated electronically on computer networks. This article gives an overview about electronic BBSs, the infrastructure required to set up BBS, and their applications in general. An attempt has also been made to design an Indian Bulletin Board System for tibraries, a conceptual BBS on which different types of information could be organised and a number of services could be provided to the users.

Abstract : The advancements in computer and telecommunication technologies have made the World Wide Web a vibrant place. Museums worldwide have recognised this phenomenon and are tapping the multimedia and interface technologies to present their contents online and in a more interesting manner. First priority to this is the user interface design and appropriate technologies to represent the contents. The paper discusses an animated interface created for an online exhibition with the Macromedia Flash software and compared the same with HTML user interface. The system evaluation results shows that only less than half of the users were satisfied with the animated version because of its inflexibility in terms of reusing and customising of information. Therefore, a HTML version was developed for the same system and compared for strengths and weaknesses in terms of user interfaces. The results showed that the respondents, especially those with lower bandwidth connections, were very comfortable with the HTML interface but aesthetically a few more percentage of respondents rated high to animated interface. The paper conclude that a balanced combination of HTML and animated interfaces will provide both aesthetics and functionality required for an online exhibition.

Abstract : Security threats over Internet have necessitated information security awareness among the users. Concern about information security is also on because of financial risks associated with it. Importance of safe computing practices being advocated by several governments, professional organisations, and individuals has impelled the need for secured commercial computer and application systems. Many countries have formulated cyber laws to protect their business, security, and user’s rights and privacy and for educating people about their own and other countries cyber laws so that they do not have any problems relating to information security over Internet. The paper presents the result of a survey conducted to find out the general awareness of cyber laws and computer security among Singaporeans, covering a cross section of the computer users in the country. The paper shows that most of the participants of the survey were not able to actively keep themselves updated with the latest information related to computer security and this fact seems consistent across the different professions. Also, all the participants of the survey agreed on the need for ethics in the pervasive use of the Internet where problems in security, privacy enforcement and threats of viruses are obvious and cannot be avoided.

Abstract : The introduction of digital information resources on Internet has revolutionised the academic world. The Internet is paving way for a great leap in the field of higher education and research. This paper is an attempt to investigate the use of Internet resources by the academic community of the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU), Tirupati. For this purpose a survey was carried out using questionnaire tool. The results show that users from all branches of science are making use of Internet resources better than social sciences and humanities. Providing training to its users at the beginning of each semester will improve its use and reduce the problems faced by the library users. The paper highlighted the various problems and issues involved in handling digital library and has given suggestions to improve the library services to meet the demands of the users.

Abstract : Records document the actions of an organisation’s business activities. Nowadays, more and more government agencies, companies and healthcare organisations are moving towards electronic records from records on paper. In healthcare organisations, Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system is being used to capture, organize, maintain and retrieve patient’s medical records. EMR system consists of a comprehensive database used to store and access patient’s healthcare information. The EMR has replaced the existing paper medical records as the primary source of information for healthcare purposes for all clinical, legal, and administrative purposes. The paper aims to review the existing Electronic Records Management Systems (ERMS) and assess the impact of EMR systems on the healthcare industry. This paper also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of EMR systems and problems encountered while implementing and using the systems by different groups of users.

Abstract : The Web has evolved from mere HTML static pages to dynamic pages and providing information to users in interactive and engaging ways. One of the most revolutionary tools that has changed the online experience of Internet users is the Macromedia Flash. Nowadays, Web designers are providing both the HTML and Flash interfaces to users. However, the users are still not sure about which interface style, i.e., hypertext-based HTML interface or animation-based Flash interface, is better to use in terms of usability and effectiveness. This paper compares the strengths and weaknesses of both animated and hypertext Web interfaces in terms of their usability and also users’ attitudes and perceptions about these interfaces. To conduct the comparative study, an animated user interface was developed using Flash for the Division of Information Studies website of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. This interface was compared with the existing hypertext user interface of the same website. It was found that animated user interface was preferred for its text readability, appropriate use of colours and buttons, visual consistency and sequencing of screens, attractiveness of design, pleasantness and user-friendliness of interface, ease of use, content coverage, organisation of information, navigation, and usability. The hypertext user interface was preferred for its speed of downloading and its navigational capability that complemented the Web browser navigation.
